Growing up in New York and Miami, Dr. Gutierrez said she always knew she wanted to be a doctor, and she always knew she wanted to study and treat the brain. “I knew I was going to be either a psychiatrist or a neurologist and the nervous system has always been something that just fascinated me.”
On her path to medicine, she earned her medical degree from East Central University in the Dominican Republic. Her extensive post-graduate training includes a residency in adult psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, New York; a residency in neurology at Louisiana State University, New Orleans; a fellowship in child psychiatry at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, New York; and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology Louisiana State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Gutierrez was a founding member of the ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic at LSU Health Science Center. She worked collaboratively with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the ALS Association, providing care to patients and their families. In addition, she was involved in research with the North Eastern ALS Society and as a member of the ALS Clinic at the New Orleans VA Clinic. She currently is running the Orlando Health Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic. They are part of the ALSA Nationally Recognized Clinics.
Passionate about her profession, she is board-certified in neurology and neuromuscular medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. She is also board-certified in electrodiagnostic medicine by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
Having more than 20 years of clinical experience with MS, ALS, and Neuromuscular disorders, Dr. Gutierrez has held leadership roles with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and MDA. Moreover, she has been the principal investigator for many research trials.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurodiagnostic Medicine, she is a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Hispanic Medical Association, the Florida Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
