Following his Internal Medicine training he went on to hold fellowships in Cardiology from Georgetown University Medical Center/Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C., and in Clinical Electrophysiology from the Krannert Institute at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN. Upon completing his fellowships he joined the faculty of Georgetown University as an instructor of Medicine and Anesthesia and served as the Medical Director of the Cardiac Transplantation Clinic.
Dr. Caruso’s academic career continued at the University of Arizona as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine where he served as Director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory and continued his research in cardiac ablation and antiarrhythmic medications. While at the University of Arizona and later in private practice in Richmond Virginia Dr. Caruso participated as an investigator in several national and international clinical trials. He is the author of multiple academic articles and book chapters and has presented his work at the national meetings of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.
As a leader in cardiovascular care, Dr.Caruso was a founding member of the Idiopathic Ventricular Fibrillation Registry of the United States, served as a member of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology Committee on Health Policy, and was a grant reviewer for the American Heart Association. While practicing in Richmond Virginia, Dr. Caruso represented the American College of Cardiology on the Virgina Medicare Advisory Committee, was chairman of the Trigon(BCBS) Cardiology Specialty Advisor Board for Central Virginia, and served as Chairman, of the Department of Cardiology and Director of Electrophysiology at St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian Virginia.
More recently Dr. Caruso has served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas at Texas Dell Medical School, where he imparts his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of medical professionals.
Recognized as a diplomat by the National Board of Medical Examiners and by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the Specialty of Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, the doctor is board-certified in cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, The Heart Rhythm Society(North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology), The American Heart Association, and The Travis County Medical Society.
