Michael B. Guess, DDS, MS, MA: El Dorado Hills Orthodontist Advancing Orthodontic Innovation and Patient-Centered Care

Combining Hybrid Orthodontic Treatment, Airway-Focused Care, and Clinical Education to Create Healthier Smiles and Improve Quality of Life

(WorldFrontNews Editorial):- Anderson, California Jul 30, 2026 (Issuewire.com) – For more than four decades, Dr. Michael B. Guess has devoted his professional life to one guiding principle: improving the lives of patients through exceptional orthodontic care while advancing the science and art of orthodontics through research, education, innovation, and professional service.

Throughout a distinguished career spanning more than forty years, he has treated nearly 20,000 patients, combining compassionate patient care with scientific inquiry, lifelong learning, and a relentless commitment to improving treatment outcomes.

From an early age, Dr. Guess demonstrated exceptional academic ability and intellectual curiosity. He was recognized as a National Merit (PSAT) Semifinalist and became a nationally ranked junior chess player at age fourteen, experiences that fostered the analytical thinking and strategic problem-solving skills that would later define his professional career.

While attending the University of California, Davis, Dr. Guess joined the Physio-Psychology Research Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Ken Henry, participating in investigations into the ototoxic effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics. The resulting research, published in Acta Oto-Laryngologica, contributed to the growing scientific understanding that these antibiotics could damage hearing, particularly in vulnerable patients. This early experience established a lifelong commitment to evidence-based research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dr. Guess earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, San Francisco, where he continued his scientific training in the University’s Biomaterials Laboratory, evaluating emerging dental materials and restorative products.

His passion for research continued at The Ohio State University, where he completed his orthodontic residency while earning both a Master of Science and a Master of Arts. During residency, he conducted extensive investigations in orthodontic biomaterials, biomechanics, adhesive technology, and computerized diagnosis. He also received specialized training in Scanning Electron Microscopy, becoming one of the very few graduate students entrusted with independently operating this sophisticated research instrument. The microscopic images he produced contributed to investigations of orthodontic materials and supported product development efforts within the orthodontic industry.

Among Dr. Guess’s earliest and most significant scientific contributions was his pioneering work in computer-generated orthodontic treatment simulation. At a time when orthodontic diagnosis remained almost entirely analog, he developed methods for digitally visualizing anticipated tooth movement before treatment began.

His investigations were published in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, presented before the American Association of Orthodontists, and featured on the covers of two orthodontic journals.

Years later, Professor Ze’ev Davidovitch, Chairman of Orthodontics at Harvard University, recognized this work as preceding the widespread adoption of computerized orthodontic treatment visualization and invited Dr. Guess to interview for the position of Clinic Director at Harvard University’s Department of Orthodontics. Professor Davidovitch later described Dr. Guess as one of the most talented orthodontists he had encountered during more than four decades of teaching and research.

Throughout his career, Dr. Guess has remained committed to advancing the profession through scholarship. He has authored more than thirty peer-reviewed publications and scientific abstracts encompassing orthodontic biomaterials, ceramic bracket technology, digital orthodontics, computer-assisted diagnosis, pain management, and contemporary orthodontic treatment. More recently, he has renewed his scholarly efforts through a series of evidence-based review articles examining hybrid orthodontics, treatment sequencing, smile development, expansion protocols, clear aligner biomechanics, and long-term stability, reflecting his continuing commitment to integrating scientific evidence with clinical excellence.

Dr. Guess’s dedication to education has been equally distinguished. He has served as an instructor at The Ohio State University, UCLA, UCSF, and Meiji Medical College, developing continuing education programs for dentists and orthodontists while teaching topics ranging from orthodontic biomechanics and computerized diagnosis to dental acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for myofascial pain.

His expertise has been recognized through invited presentations at the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research, the California Dental Association, Beijing Medical University, and the Shanghai Municipal Dental Center, where he presented his pioneering work in computerized orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Leadership and service have been hallmarks of Dr. Guess’s professional life. He is a Lifetime Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and has served as Past President of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, Editor of the CDABO EZine (2013-2018), ABO Examination Instructor, and Northern California Peer Review Orthodontist (2013-2021). His contributions to organized orthodontics have been recognized through the Samir Bishara Award (2016) and his selection as California Orthodontist of the Year (2025).

During the past two decades, Dr. Guess has increasingly focused on translating decades of scientific investigation into practical clinical systems that improve everyday orthodontic care. This work culminated in the development of the Hybridis ProtocolFoundations First…Aligners Finish, the Three Gateway Diagnostic System, and the Hybridis Gold Clinical Outcome Report. These comprehensive frameworks emphasize accurate diagnosis, biologically sound treatment sequencing, interdisciplinary thinking, and measurable clinical outcomes.

Long before airway-focused orthodontics became a major area of investigation, Dr. Guess observed that thoughtful orthopedic development and correction of transverse and sagittal deficiencies could be associated with improvements in breathing and overall patient function. As scientific understanding has evolved, a growing body of literature has investigated many of the physiologic relationships that have long informed his clinical philosophy.

Today, Dr. Guess serves as a Key Opinion Leader for DynaFlex Corporation, collaborating in orthodontic education, appliance innovation, and clinical protocol development while continuing to lecture, publish, mentor colleagues, and refine evidence-informed treatment systems designed to improve patient care.

Despite his many academic accomplishments, Dr. Guess considers his greatest achievement to be the confidence placed in him by the thousands of patients and families who have entrusted him with their care. Over the course of his career, he has treated nearly 20,000 patients, often caring for multiple generations within the same family. Those relationships reflect the values that have guided his professional life: integrity, compassion, humility, lifelong learning, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

His nomination for a National Physicians Award by one of his own patients represents perhaps the highest professional honor a physicin can receive–not recognition sought from within the profession, but gratitude expressed by someone whose life has been personally touched by compassionate, dedicated care.

Professional Philosophy

“Throughout my career, I have believed that every patient deserves more than straight teeth. They deserve thoughtful diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, compassionate care, and a physician who never stops learning. My goal has always been simple: to leave every patient healthier, every smile better, and the profession stronger than I found it.”
