The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the leaders of the European Union to impose new sanctions on Russia before they invade Ukraine, and also warned that acting after the invasion would be too late.
The president, speaking to the reporters in Brussels, said that he is ready to talk with Russia to ease tensions between the two nations. But Vladimir Putin is reluctant to appear and talk.
27 national leaders of the EU will probe into the matter and will try their best to prevent any inclination towards war at the summit on Thursday. A statement drafted in the meeting also goes “any further military aggression against Ukraine will have massive consequences and severe cost in response.”
“For us, it is important to have sanctions applied before, rather than after the conflict would happen….”Zelenskyy said. He further added, “We have a war going on for eight years. We understand that only if the sanctions are applied prior to the armed conflict would they become a prevention mechanism for any possible escalation”
Zelenskyy said that he has discussed with some EU leaders and decided on five options for responding to the Russian attack; however, he neglected to provide the details.
